Location: external pageVilla Garbald, Castasegna, Switzerland
Applications due: 3 May, 2024

Program

By the end of the week, participants are able to plan a social network research project, describe data, interpret network statistics, and test hypotheses on network data. They will be aware of the most important developments in the field and know how to dive into the topics most relevant for their research project. The teaching style involves a combination of lectures, practical exercises, group projects, and discussions. During two afternoon hikes, participants will experience the beautiful landscape of the Bergell valley.

Statistics at the University of Milano-Bicocca. Previously, she was a
post-doctoral researcher at Social Networks Lab, ETH Zurich. Her
research focuses on developing statistical methods for analysing network
data. In particular, she is interested in developing network models and
techniques for their estimation, specification, and goodness of fit. She
is also interested in applying statistical network methods in the social
and economic sciences.

Venue

Villa Garbald in Castasegna / Bergell represents a chapter of building history of international importance: the famous architect Gottfried Semper designed the «Italian country house» for the couple Agostino and Johanna Garbald-Gredig in 1862. The house was renovated in 2004 by the architects Miller & Maranta. At the same time, the modern new building "Roccolo" was added to the property.

The Villa Garbald is Semper's only building South of the Alps. The Garbald couple lived in the country house from 1864 until 1958. Since 1958, the villa and the family's rich cultural heritage have been owned by the Fondazione Garbald.

Today, Villa Garbald is a place for workshops and retreats for groups from science, education, culture and economy. The special «spirito» of the Villa Garbald seminar center includes cultural events and an annually changing art installation by contemporary artists with a focus on photography, organized in cooperation with the Graubünden Art Museum. Villa Garbald and its garden are the central meeting place of the summer school.

The Villa Garbald values seasonal, local products from Bergell and nearby Italy and thus supports local trade and alpine agriculture. Short transport routes allow native and regionally harvested vegetables and fruits to ripen naturally, which affects quality and aroma. Vegetables, pasta, Bergeller cheese or meat from organic gray cattle are freshly prepared in the Garbald kitchen. They cater for special dietry needs, about which they should be informed in advance.

Participants are accommodated in the Roccolo building, in single and double rooms.
